With his unique interpretations and colourful approach to the organ, Steven Knieriem (2001) is one of The Netherlands most promising young organists. He is active as a soloist, accompanist and composer, and collaborates with professional choirs and orchestras, demonstrating an affinity for a wide range of musical genres, from Bach to contemporary music.

Steven began his musical training at the age of nine at the Music School in his hometown in Zeeland, where he took organ lessons from Jos Vogel and piano lessons from Rien Balkenende. He went on to study at the Rotterdam Conservatoire (Codarts) under Ben van Oosten, who introduced him to a wide range of symphonic organ repertoire. In 2024, he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Organ and Church Music cum laude. For his final exam, he performed Poulenc’s Organ Concerto, together with orchestra, in the Main Hall of De Doelen in Rotterdam. He then went on to study for his Master’s degree under Zuzana Ferjenčíková and Christian Schmitt at the same conservatoire. In 2026, he also obtained his Master’s degree with distinction.

As a concert organist, Steven has performed in leading concert series both at home and abroad. In the Netherlands, he has given concerts at venues including the Grote of St. Bavokerk in Haarlem, the Grote Kerk in Dordrecht, the Domkerk in Utrecht and St John’s Cathedral in ’s-Hertogenbosch. He has also given concerts throughout Europe in cities such as Paris, Madrid, London, Düsseldorf, Vienna and Luxembourg. His collaborations with orchestras and choirs took him to concert halls such as the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, where he performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 2. With Philharmonie Zuidnederland, he performed Fauré’s Requiem and Bach’s St Matthew Passion. As a soloist, Steven has performed Francis Poulenc’s Organ Concerto and various other works for organ and orchestra by composers including Dupré and Guilmant.

As a church organist, Steven works at the Elandstraatkerk in The Hague, where he plays the magnificent Franssen organ, built in 1906. In addition, he was appointed Organ Scholar at St Peter and Paul’s in Ratingen (Germany) in 2025.

Through his own compositions and transcriptions of orchestral and piano music, Steven aims to demonstrate just how versatile the organ is across a wide range of forms and styles, thereby expressing, as a performer, his own distinctive musical voice.
